Construction project at the fort

A lot of people are asking about the construction going on at the fort.

The fort restoration project will keep the fort closed until March 2011.  The remainder of the Park will remain open as usual.

The work mostly relates to repairing damage due to drainage problems, and prevention of damage in the future.

The cost is about $1.1 million, primarily funded by Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Save America's Treaures through the National Parks Service.

Historic Fort De Soto gets fortified

Historic Fort De Soto gets fortified | Tampa Bay, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Sarasota |

In spite of the current budget hardships, there are some things that just can't be avoided. It's costing over a million dollars to fix the drainage problems at the fort.

It's been a problem that has been recognized for several years, but doing major work on a 100 year old fort takes lots of planning.

The fort area will be closed to the public until March, but the rest of the park will continue operate as usual.

Pinellas commission passes $1.6 billion budget

Pinellas commission passes $1.6 billion budget - St. Petersburg Times

Just to save you from looking for your calculator, that works out to be about a 4.1% cut. Pretty respectable cut, and also a responsible thing to do, I think--in light of the fact that we are probably looking at several years of tight times.

Pinellas County parks to remain free

Pinellas County parks to remain free : Pinellas County - Tampa Bay Newspapers

These days it's rare to see people who don't "take the easy way out", but Pinellas County Commissioners made the tough choice.

I think the main factors were: the principle, keeping parks free for all; the cost of setting up pay-per-use; and that there was another choice that could postpone the charging of fees.

Watching the Oil Spill

Officials: Oil spill threat still low on Florida's west coast

Florida's west coast continues to dodge the oil spill bullet. The loop current and off-shore winds are helping. Even if oil makes it to shore, it will be in the form of tar balls which are easier to deal with than fresh oil.

Park Entrance Fees - No Easy Answer

Going to Fort De Soto Park could soon cost $8 a car - St. Petersburg Times

$8 or $5, it's probably good value, depending on what you're doing in the park. If you have a big family picnic and day at the beach, it's a bargain. However, if you live nearby and stop in twice a week to have a 30 minute walk and maybe eat a sandwich before continuing with your busy day, even three dollars is going to seem excessive. Hopefully a season pass will be available at some reasonable price.

Oil Spill Is Threat To Shorelines, Somewhere

Strange-smelling air is safe to breathe, county officials say - St. Petersburg Times

Faint smells in the air around the Tampa Bay area are reminders of the oil spill off the shore of Louisiana. It might be over 300 miles away, but it's leaking thousands of barrels of oil into the water every day, and the oil slick is getting bigger and more threatening.

Park Fees in the Future??

Pinellas might impose park fees to balance budget

One of the most notable things about Fort De Soto park was the fact that the public got this wonderful deal, for free! That might be changing. Entry fees, and parking fees, to name a couple of things, are up for consideration.
